Yoga & Rotation Reflection

As cliché as it may sound, I love when I hear an inspiring phrase during a relaxing yoga class.

Dallas recently had a new CorePower Yoga open up at the beginning of August. I’m already convinced this place was built for me considering it’s right on my way to Baylor, and I happened to have moved here at the end of July. Score!

I’m not a newbie by any means, I just had a hard time finding a studio in Arizona that I totally loved and would go to more than once a week. I love that CorePower not only has traditional flow classes, but also offers a yoga sculpt with weights so I can strength train as well.

Last week I was in class when the teacher reminded us of the importance of “letting go” the need to control everything around us. By letting go of trying to control people, current situations, and future outcomes we have more time and energy to open up to the possibilities and opportunities that may come. Such a powerful yet extraordinarily simple concept.

What else have I been up to besides trying to make it to yoga a few times a week? That goes without saying…working my tail off as an intern, of course!

Here is a highlight of last week:

Rotation Review:

This past week (and the week ahead), I’m working in the outpatient setting at the Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute. Don’t judge a book by its cover–this place is incredible.

Through grant funding and donations this place offers free diabetes health education, pre-diabetes prevention classes, private counseling sessions with the dietitian (and me), free healthy cooking classes, and much more. It’s a whole different world than the inpatient setting in the hospital.

So far I’ve been able to counsel patients one-on one, observe the education classes, assist with a cooking class, help my preceptor analyze the nutrition of dozens of recipes. I even got to flex my creative muscles and made flyers in Photoshop for various upcoming events at the clinic. Being at the diabetes clinic has truly been a match made in my dietetic internship heaven!

Don’t get me wrong, this rotation has been extremely rewarding–but has been a tremendous amount of work as well. I’ve had my fair share of 10+ hour days, only to go straight home and continue to plug away at my assignments. This weekend, I spent over 12 hours on Saturday making a weekly diabetic meal plan on a budget of $5/day. Tough, but necessary.

Each rotation in my internship has strategically planned assignments to allow me to increase my knowledge base as a future dietitian. Sometimes it may feel like busy work, but I have to remind myself that they are challenging me for a reason. My preceptors want me to succeed, if it means having to push to the limits sometimes.

People often ask if my experience so far is “harder” than when I was in school last year and it’s tough for me to explain. The answer to that question? It depends.

The traditional classroom setting is a lot of work and is very mentally challenging, but it is more consistent. On the first day of class every semester, you get your syllabus with all your assignments and you continue about your days going to class at the same time. Some points in the semester will be harder than others, depending on how many exams/presentations/papers that are due. Regardless, you know what you have coming up and you can work ahead if you need to (or want to).

The internship is a bit different. My schedule changes daily and I have spontaneous unpredictable assignments to complete at any point as well as research projects, case studies, and required weekly meetings.

My goal with each and every post about my internship experience at Baylor is to inspire (hopefully not deter) those of you thinking about applying in the future. If you’re a person that can easily ‘go with the flow’ (or giving up the need to control as my yoga teacher would say), then you will have an easier transition to intern life.

Namaste, ya’ll!
